The Dogs

Bred for a job. Still wired for it.

Nobody made these dogs to sit on a cushion. Every breed on your sofa is the end of a long line of grafters, bred for a trade. The job's mostly gone. The instinct never left. Here's what your dog was made to do, and how to give that itch somewhere to go.

A Border Collie working sheep, locked in the herding crouch
No. 01

The Herders

Border Collie · Kelpie · Aussie · Corgi

Bred to

Move livestock all day on instinct and eye. Read a flock, hold a line, never quit before the work was done.

The itch today

A job and a rule. Fetch with structure, scatter-feeding, agility, tricks. Idle hands herd children and hoover skirting boards.

No. 02

The Gundogs

Labrador · Spaniel · Golden · Vizsla

Bred to

Find game, flush it, and carry it back soft-mouthed across field and water without a fuss. All day, in all weather.

The itch today

Retrieve games, water work, a proper long run, and scent work. A bored gundog finds its own birds, usually yours.

A Rottweiler standing watch at a farm gate at dusk
No. 03

The Guardians

Rottweiler · GSD · Mastiff · Cane Corso

Bred to

Watch over stock, home and family. Big, steady, switched-on. Calm until calm wasn't the right answer.

The itch today

A clear job, firm structure, and something to be responsible for. They want a post to hold, give them one.

A muddy working terrier charging out of a dug hole
No. 04

The Terriers

Jack Russell · Patterdale · Border · Bull

Bred to

Go to ground after vermin, alone, in the dark, and not back down. Small bodies, enormous opinions.

The itch today

Digging pits, flirt poles, snuffle hunts, ball games to the point of exhaustion. Give the engine a track or it makes one.

A lurcher at full sprint, all four feet off the ground
No. 05

The Sighthounds

Greyhound · Whippet · Lurcher · Saluki

Bred to

Spot a hare at distance and run it down in a flat sprint. Built entirely around one explosive chase, then a long lie-down.

The itch today

Short, hard sprints off the lead in safe space, lure coursing, then a soft bed and zero guilt about the napping.

A husky pulling on a trail in the cold, breath visible
No. 06

The Haulers

Husky · Malamute · Samoyed · Bernese

Bred to

Pull a loaded sled across frozen miles, in a team, for hours. Endurance engines with a coat to match and a will to move.

The itch today

Distance, and plenty of it. Canicross, bikejor, weighted walks, long hikes. A tired hauler is a quiet hauler.

Whatever the trade, feed the engine.

Hard work needs proper fuel. Omegas, joints and everything else, so your dog can keep doing the thing it was built for.
